Week 11, 17 Miles long run

This one was a though one.
Unexpected, as I already did 2 times 16 miles.
Maybe the heat - It is hot on the south shore, even at 9AM.
Maybe the accumulated fatigue.
But, As I was strugglin g in the first 4 miles, I understood pretty fast that it will be a painful one.

South Kihei Beach at 7AM.
Lots of tourists out for a morning walk

Wailea. Clean.

Nice cove near Makena.
Molokini in the back.

Makena Road, south.
Through the lava fields.

Haleakala, from the south.
See the lava flow ?

La Perouse bay

This is a surf spot ?

Lava

La Perouse road.
Hard to run on this barefoot ;)

La Perouse memorial stone.

To be fair, I was feeling like "Not today !!!!", and unfortunately picked an early one (6AM) on the south shore. Arrived late and got hit by heat as soon as 8AM, couple of miles in.
But as they say in the training book : "even if you don't feel like it, no excuses, you are committed. Rain, Snow, Tiredness, soreness, nothing can stop you, you are a marathoner."
Well, this is my translation, but they are pretty explicit on this point.
This is all about commitment.

Run summary.
not too bad, my pace fall down to 12 min / mile toward the end.
First mile was on dry sand.

In any case, I believe it gave me a good insight on the last hour and half of the marathon will be. A crawl through hell at a slow 12m/m pace. But I did not walk.
Then, I won't.
...
I hope.

Closure

Yesterday was one of those rare day without wind and good swell.
6-8+ feet, some bigger sets.
It was crowded in the morning, but acceptable toward the end of the day, when I went.

Some good pictures from the local photographer:

There is some local talents on Maui

Looks like there was some tubes at 'The Point'

Another local photographer (under equipped):

From shore, it is always hard to realize the size of the sets.

I have mix feeling after this session.
I did not get on the way of anybody (one for once I wisely choose to eat the white wall and get caught on the inside and pounded), which is a sensible progress.
I managed to drop in 3 or 4 waves, one of them being big and scary (pounded again).
I did not give up after each pounding.

The surf report was calling 6 to 8 feet, up to 12 feet at standout breaks (which is Hookipa definition).
Then, technically, I surfed into double overhead conditions.

Arguably, it is a small Double OverHead.
But considering the timing - the end of the year - , and the shift in my priorities toward the running practice,
I think I could accept those conditions and called it an end.
As some of you might remember, one of the initial goal that sprouted this blog was to be able to kitesurf, surf and paddlesurf in double overhead conditions, and I do believe I am capable of this, in the proper conditions.

That being said, new adventures and goals are coming, the first marathon is in sight !

"You don't want my playlist" #2

No. Really. You don't.
Still, if you are curious.....

Nowadays I am really into the Sidi's.

Back to Baaaaasics

I found this pretty jumpy, and perfect to run.
Cannot wait for the release of their next album (27 January 2014).
Sometime I would like to live in France I could see those guys on stage.

One thing for certain. When I am losing my stride and falling apart on the road, they usually put me back on track.
Literally.

Grain based

Nutrition specialist would advise for lots of carbs when training.
I think I am covered.

Typical breakfeast, lunch and snacks.

Since I am a kid, I don't think I ate soooo much of grains.
And the weird fact is I don't really mind.
Really, I enjoy a croissant time to time at 'La Provence', but for the real food, I crave something grainy.

Overall, it makes it easier to count calories, and it seems I finally managed to manage my weight loss to a slow downside curve, slowly getting to 145 Lbs before the marathon, without feeling tired and still full of energy.

Waipoli 16 Miles run - Week 10 in the pocket

Second very long week, with more than 34 Miles run.
Highlight of the week was the long run, along the south face of the volcano.
Really cool, if not for the hunters who tried to scare me, because I jumped the fence, and went into their reserve.
Well, they don't have a license to kill. Yet.

Top of Waipoli road. Pretty.

We are high. Just not yet.

Path trough the forest. No traffic.

It is pretty out there.

Now, we are high.

Beautiful view on the south shore.

Almost at Haleakala summit
Oh ! A tree.

As I round the island, fog set in.

On top of the clouds

There was some serious climbing.
And a serious pace drop.(Hunters encounter)

To summarize, it was a pretty hard run, long and with some high climbs. Good thing is I went over it with a typical pace of 10min/mile.
Overall, I feel I can run 3 hours now.

But four ?
